To begin the application process for grants, loans and employment, you will need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA is available in 2 formats, a paper application that you mail and an online application that you submit over the Internet.

It is recommended that you complete the online application for a faster turn-around time.

It is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, many colleges use this application not only to award federal aid like Pell grant but also campus based aid and the state uses the information to award state grants such as Cal Grants.

First Time Applicant
The paper FAFSA is available at local high school campuses as well as colleges, libraries, carreer centers and universities nationwide. You may pick up a FAFSA in our office in the Holt building, room 101.

Renewal Applicants
The paper Renewal FAFSA is automatically mailed to you if you applied for aid by June 30, for the previous academic year. This application provides a summary of the information you reported on our last year's FAFSA.

The electronic FAFSA is available through FAFSA on the Web. You may file electronically on campus or from your home computer.

We suggest that you have the paper FAFSA completed prior to completing it online to avoid mishaps and have your tax information close by for reference.

Here are some general tips for completing the FAFSA, for a complete explanation and instructions for each section, visit the U. S. Deprment of Educations's Web site. If you have questions, please call 1-800-433-3243, or 209-954-5115 or visit the Financial Aid & Veterans Services office in Holt 101.

1. Read the istructions
2. Complete the entire form as accurately as possible*, Ommitting information or leaving questions unanswered may cause delays.
3. List San Joaquin Delta College as a college choice and our school code 001280.
4. Keep a copy of your FAFSA, tax forms and any other documents you used to complete the form.
5. Register for Selective Service if you are a male whi is at least 18 years oled and have not already registered.

*If you were determined independent through a previous review process, or feel you have extenuating circumstances, you must complete a Dependency Petition for review of your dependency status. Submit the completed form, any other pertinent documentation and your paper FAFSA to Financial Aid & Veterans Services office for the review process in Holt 101 prior to mailing your FAFSA.

You can file your FAFSA anytime between January 1st, preceding the academic year you will attend, and June 30th, the close of your acadmic year, however, there is a priority date set by SJDC and the state if you are appying for state grants. The priority date is determined by the post marked date on your FAFSA, you must mail your FAFSA before midnight of the deadline date. Generally the deadline is:

the 1st week of March between the 1st and 4th, the Important Dates section of this site for the specific deadline date.

Because some of the grants have limited funding, they are awarded on a first come first serve basis, not meeting the deadline will mean you may receive less financial aid.inancial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given

to students who complete their application file by April 2 prior to the academic year.

A completed application file includes:

1. a valid Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR, an electronic version of the Student Aid Report (SAR) that the student receives in the mail
2. all required supporting documents.

The ISIR is sent to us if you list our college or our Title IV Institution Code (001280) on the FAFSA or SAR.

You must file your FAFSA with the federal processor, either by completing the FAFSA on the Web or by mail.

Mail your paper FAFSA to the federal processor in the envelope provided in the appliction booklet.

After the Department of Education processes your application, you will be sent a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR outlines the information you provided on the FAFSA and reports your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

If you apply electronically, a SAR Information Acknowledgement is mailed to you within 2 weeks from the date you submitted your application.

If you apply by mail, it will take up to four weeks for your application to be processed and a SAR to be mailed to you.

If it's been more than four weeks since you submitted your application and you haven't received anything, you can check on the status of your application at FAFSA on the Web or by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at:
1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

When you receive your SAR, review the information to ensure it is accurate and complete. If there are no corrections to the SAR, simply maintain it for your records. If corrections are necessary, you have the following options:

Make the corrections on the SAR. Sign the SAR and send both pages back to the processor at the address provided.

OR
Make the corrections online through FAFSA on the Web, even if you didn't apply using the electronic application. You will need your Department of Education PIN to access your record. Your PIN will also serve as your signature. A parental signature (PIN) is required when parental data is changed on the application. You may make changes to all information except social security number and date of birth.
OR

Bring your signed (remember parent's signature is required if your SAR contains parental information) SAR and any related documentation to the financial aid office in Goleman 125.

Once the SJDC Financial Aid Office has received your financial aid application data from the processor, you will receive* an email from us giving you your PIN. To find out what forms are required to complete your file you will be directed to Delta's Online Financial Aid System where you will log in using your SSN & Fin. Aid PIN.

*If 6 or more weeks have passed since you mailed your paper FAFSA or completed your online FAFSA and you have not received an email with your Finaid PIN you either did not list SJDC's school code (001280) on your FAFSA or some other problem exists with your FAFSA.   
To resolve application problems refer to the Common Questions page, if the answer to your question or solution to your problem is not there then Contact the Financial Aid Office (209-954-5115) and we will work with you to resolve any problems with your application.

Bring or mail any requested documents and completed forms to the Financial Aid office, once your file is complete you will receive an award notice sent to your the email address you provided on your FAFSA.

April 2*, prior to the academic year you will attend is the priority deadline for submitting requested file documentation to SJDC (to complete your file).

If you submit the documents after the priority date you will be considered a late applicant and are less likely to receive certain grants and scholarships due to funding limitations.

*It is important to mail your FAFSA before March 2nd each year in order to meet the SJDC priority deadline.

Once you have submitted the requested documents, your file is reviewed and your financial need is determined, an Award Notice will be emailed to you, you will be directed to Delta's Online Financial Aid System where you will log in using your SSN & Fin. Aid PIN to access your Award Information and Payment Schedule.

When you receive your Award Notice depends on the date you completed your file, the accuracy of the information you've provided and whether you've been selected for verification.

When you receive your financial aid Award Notice, READ it carefully, including the TERMS OF OFFER and the Satisfactory Academic Progress Guidelines. Failure to abide by the Satisfactory Academic Progress Guidelines will result in probation or termination (disqualification) of the aid offer.

The Award Notice will direct you to Delta's Online Financial Aid System to view your financial aid awards and payment schedule.
Note also that your Payment Schedule will indicate the dates the checks will be mailed to you and not the actual dates you receive your financial aid checks in the mail.


Your Financial Aid check(s) will be mailed to you at the address you have on file in the Admissions and Records Office. If it is not correct, you must submit a Change of Address in Holt 101 or email your change of address to the Office of Financial Aid & Veterans Services.
CHECKS WILL NOT BE FORWARDED.

If a Payment Schedule portion does not appear on your Award Section of Delta's Online Financial Aid System , more than likely you have only been awarded an award which doesn't require direct disbursement to you.

Such an award or grant may be in the form of an Ernollement Fee Waiver which is paid directly to the Admissions, Records and Registration Office.

Each semester, your academic transcript will be reviewed to check your progress toward your academic objective. Students who fail to meet minimum satisfactory academic progress as detailed in the Terms of Offer and Financial Aid Academic Progress Guidelines will be placed on Financial Aid Probation. Failure to make progress during two consecutive semesters could disqualify a student from receiving any further assistance.

Students must also complete their academic objectivewithin an allowable time frame. Generally students who are eligible to receive financial aid will continue to do so until they reach the 90 unit maximum.

Students must reapply for financial aid every academic year. It is not automatically renewed.

Loss of Financial Aid Eligibility, indicates that you are currently not eligible receive financial aid funding.

Students who fail to meet minimum satisfactory academic progress (completing at least 75% of the units attempted with a C average) as detailed in the Terms of Offer and Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Guidlines during two consecutive semesters are disqualified resuling in the loss of financial aid eligibility.

Students must also complete their academic objective within an allowable time frame. Generally students who are eligible to receive financial aid will continue to do so until they reach the 90 unit maximum at the community college level.

Once financial aid has been denied for lack of satisfactory progress, a student may be removed from Financial Aid Disqualification status and placed on Financial Aid Probation (eligible to receive financial aid funds) status based on one of the following:

1. Completing a semester in which ALL the following conditions are met:
   • A minimum of nine (9.0) units are completed.
   • A minimum GPA of 2.0 or greater is achieved for the semester.
   • Units completed represent at least 75% of the units attempted
2. Completing a summer session during which ALL the following conditions are met:
   • 4.0 units are completed for credit.
   • The GPA for the term is 2.0 or greater (“C” or better).
   • Units are applicable toward the student’s degree or program.
3. If Probation or Disqualification was based on less than half-time enrollment from the prior semester(s), completing the equivalent or higher number of units for credit with at least a 2.0 GPA.
4. Submitting an appeal to the Director of Financial Aid or designee. Appeal applications must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office in Holt 101.

After financial aid has been denied due to completion of 90 units, a student may request re-evaluation by submitting an appeal to the Director of Financial Aid and Veteran's Services or designee. Appeal applications maybe obtained through the Financial Aid Office or download the Appeal application on this web site.

Students may appeal both Financial Aid Probation and Financial Aid Disqualification if there were unusual or mitigating circumstances that affected the student's ability to make progress.
